Business conditions DI

(1) All industries

For the April-June period of 2015, the business conditions DI for all industries was minus 18.7 (down 0.9 points from minus 17.8 for the previous quarter), showing a slight increase in the negative margin.

The business conditions DI for manufacturing was minus 15.6 (down 1.5 points from minus 14.1 for the previous quarter), indicating an increase in the negative margin. The business conditions DI for non-manufacturing was minus 19.6 (down 0.3 points from minus 19.3 for the previous quarter), showing a slight increase in the negative margin.

(2) Manufacturing

The business conditions DI for manufacturing was minus 15.6 (down 1.5 points from minus 14.1 for the previous quarter), indicating an increase in the negative margin.

To be specific, for the 14 industries in manufacturing, the DI remained negative with the negative margin decreased for seven industries, including minus 1.1 (up 10.2 points from the previous quarter) for pulp, paper, and paper products; minus 12.3 (up 5.8 points from the previous quarter) for furniture and fixtures; minus 14.3 (up 5.7 points from the previous quarter) for textile mill products; and minus 6.5 (up 5.0 points from the previous quarter) for electricity / information and telecommunication equipment / electronic parts. The DI became negative from a positive value for machinery and equipment: minus 5.5 (down 5.7 points from the previous quarter). The DI remained negative with the negative margin increased for six industries, including minus 25.4 (down 8.7 points from the previous quarter) for ceramic, stone, and clay products; minus 14.4 (down 8.3 points from the previous quarter) for iron and steel and non-ferrous metals; minus 30.3 (down 6.3 points from the previous quarter) for timbers and wood products; and minus 29.6 (down 2.8 points from the previous quarter) for printing.

(3) Non-manufacturing

The business conditions DI for non-manufacturing was minus 19.6 (down 0.3 points from minus 19.3 for the previous quarter), showing a slight increase in the negative margin.

To be specific for industries, the DI remained negative with the negative margin decreased for retail trade, at minus 29.7 (up 0.9 points from the previous quarter); and for services, at minus 15.6 (up 0.1 point from the previous quarter). The DI remained negative with the negative margin increased for wholesale trade, at minus 16.7 (down 2.4 points from the previous quarter); and for construction, at minus 10.1 (down 0.3 points from the previous quarter).

To be specific for sectors in services, the DI remained negative with the negative margin decreased for several sectors, including minus 1.5 (up 7.2 points from the previous quarter) for information and communications and advertising; minus 6.6 (up 1.3 points from the previous quarter) for services to business establishments including professional and technical services; and minus 19.3 (up 0.6 points from the previous quarter) for personal services related with daily lives. On the other hand, the DI remained negative with the negative margin increased for several sectors, including minus 20.0 (down 6.3 points from the previous quarter) for services to business establishments including transportation and warehousing; and minus 14.0 (down 5.6 points from the previous quarter) for accommodations.

Financing DI

The financing DI for all industries was minus 14.6 (down 0.1 point from minus 14.5 for the previous quarter), indicating a slight increase in the negative margin.

To be specific for industries, the DI remained negative with the negative margin slightly decreased for manufacturing, at minus 12.0 (up 0.2 points from minus 12.2 for the previous quarter). The DI remained negative with the negative margin slightly increased for non-manufacturing, at minus 15.5 (down 0.4 points from minus 15.1 for the previous quarter).

[Topics (1)] Trends in the materials/goods purchase unit prices DI, the unit sales price/per-customer sales DI, and the profit (ordinary profit) DI

For the current quarter, the materials/goods purchase unit prices DI (“rise” minus “fall” on a year-on-year basis) was 40.5 (up 0.8 points from 39.7 for the previous quarter), showing a slight increase in the positive margin and still remaining at a high level. One the other hand, the unit sales price/per-customer sales DI (same as above) was minus 8.9 (up 3.8 points from minus 12.7 for the previous quarter), indicating a decrease in the negative margin, and the profit (ordinary profit) DI (same as above) was minus 23.3 (up 5.7 points from minus 29.0 for the previous quarter), showing a similar trend. These two DIs improved slightly, but rises in materials prices, etc. due to a weaker yen must be closely watched in the future.

The business conditions DI for all industries (“good” minus “bad” by current quarter level) was minus 24.6 (up 5.1 points from minus 29.7 for the previous quarter), showing a decrease in the negative margin.

To be specific for industries, the DI remained negative with the negative margin decreased for four industries, including minus 37.8 (up 9.2 points from 47.0 for the previous quarter) for retail trade; and minus 19.1 (up 7.8 points from minus 26.9 for the previous quarter) for services. The DI remained negative with the negative margin increased for construction, at minus 14.1 (down 2.2 points from minus 11.9 for the previous quarter).
